“Lifesaving Hazmat Gear Leaves Denver For DC,” from EMSResponder.com tells of emergency disaster gear being moved from the central state of Colorado to the Eastern of Maryland, this is important because if there was a disaster on the western side of the US the response would be slowed which would cost lives. The federal Hazardous Material (hazmat) gear is being moved from Colorado to Washington D.C. because the government officials believe that the East coast is at a bigger risk, which may be true. However, this plan is being fought because many think that this move will increase the danger for Western states such as California. This plan relates to education because students are taught to strategically put resources to save lives, and that is not being done here. This also relates to the world as well as the individual because it will put many people on the west coast at a larger risk, and might even motivate terrorists to attack the west coast because they know the live saving gear will arrive late.

“Wash. Fire Department May End Low-Priority Medical Call Response,” from EMSResponder.com tells of a Fire Department that might stop responding to low priority calls, this is important because people need emergency services even if the call isn’t “high-priority.” The Vancouver Fire Department is considering the idea of stopping responding to low priority calls. This is bad because the Fire Department is paid for by taxes and is supposed to be there in a citizen’s time of need, however if this budget cut goes through it will mean bad news for the citizens of Vancouver. 911 calls are always very hectic and scary and most of the time the dispatcher has no idea what is really going on, sometimes the reporting party could think that the injury isn’t terrible when it really is, and then the Fire Department won’t come. This matters to the world because if this department goes through with this change that can lead others into making the same change. This story also matters to education because Fire Fighters are supposed to be role models and if they wont even show up to a call they will lose that status, which is very important for kids these days. This story also matters to the individual because the Fire Department might not come in there time of need.

“Kit plane crash lands in Loveland field,” from The Denver Post, tells of a kit plane that had to make an emergency landing in Loveland, this is important because planes can be very dangerous. “Kit Planes have become very popular in recent years, the customer buys a plane that is disassembled and it is up for the customer to assemble with the help of the manufacture’s directions. There are many accidents involving homebuilt kit airplanes. However, some companies have taken measures to fight these accidents. Rotorway International sells kit helicopters and sends a qualified FAA inspector to the customer’s house after every step the customer completes. This relates to the world because had this accident happened near the city and not in rural areas the pilot might not have had anywhere to land and could have crashed and killed people. This relates to the individual and education because people need to be taught safety better.

“Baltimore Officer Takes Glass Mug to Head, “from Law Enforcement News tells of a Police Officer who was attacked after he stopped to help some motorists, this is important because the officer was there to help the people but instead he was attacked. Recently it has become cool to hate the police and speak out against them; however people don’t realize that the police are here to help them. This relates to the world because it cannot continue with this kind of hatred for those sworn to protect the people that hate them, in education students need to be taught to respect and to understand the sacrifices that officers make for them.

“Fla. Helicopter Crew Flying Fewer Patients than in Past,” from EMSresponder.com, tells of a Air Ambulance service in Florida that is flying less and less patients, this is important because Air Ambulances are often considered overused. The Air Ambulance is flying fewer patients which are a good thing in two ways. First, it decreases risk of overflying the pilots and makes the service safer; it is also good because it means that there are less serious multi-system traumas than in the past. However, this can be bad for the company that provides the Air Ambulance service, the service relies on getting called to keep in business. This relates to the world because this service is important and if the numbers drop too low, it might not be available for the people who really need it. It relates to education because students need to be taught to decipher what is most important in the world, and it relates to the individual because they just might need the helicopter in their time of need.

“Man ejected from car on I-225 and killed,” from the Denver Post tells of a man who was killed when he was ejected from his vehicle during a crash, this is important because he was not wearing a seat belt and died because of that. Cars are designed to keep the passengers safe in an accident but this counts for nothing when the passengers or drivers are not wearing a seat belt. According to the Kinematics of Trauma a passenger in a well designed car who is buckled up can survive nearly all crashes including rollovers, however if an occupant is not wearing a seat belt they are ejected through the wind-sheald and land on the ground without any type of cushion. Today, there are signs everywhere reminding motorists to buckle-up, yet there are stories everyday of people dying in crashes because they don’t buckle up. This matters to the world and education because the world cannot afford to lose smart people that could contribute to the world in car accidents that could have been avoided. This also relates to education because students need to be taught self preservation with all the other lessons that are jammed into their heads.

“Okla. Pharmacists Trained to Spot Addicts,” from Law Enforcement News tells of Oklahoma narcotics agents training pharmacists how to spot potential drug addicts based on appearance and verbal signs, this is important because it may help keep drug addicts at bay. Prescription drugs are becoming more and more popular for drug addicts because they are becoming easier for addicts to receive because the addicts can “con” pharmacists into giving them drugs. Pharmacies are not at blame for the problem because pharmacist are just trying to help people when they give them drugs, instead it is the addicts who are to blame because they trick people and make them think they need the drugs for medical purposes when they just want them to get high. However, Oklahoma is fighting back training the pharmacist to pick out addicts and to not give them drugs. This relates to the world because it will cut down drug use, it relates to education because the method teaches an example of fighting a problem. It relates to the individual because it will make the world a safer place where there is less of a risk to get killed by a driver under the influence of prescription drugs.

“No charges against man with rifle at Summit County High School,” from the Denver Post, tells of a man who picked up his daughter from school with an unloaded .22 caliber rifle in the trunk of his car, this is important because there shouldn’t be weapons on school grounds unless they are used by law enforcement. The man had a unloaded rifle in his trunk that somebody saw and reported. After investigating the issue the Summit County Sheriff’s Office is droping charges due to the fact that it was and accident and he had no hostile intentions. This relates to the world and education because it took place on an educational phyasility’s lot and it teaches a lesson for others and how important it is for people to keep the schools safe. This also relates to the individual because it would be the idividual at risk if this was a hostile action and not just an accident.

“Arizona Closing 10 state parks” from backcountry.com, tells of the state of Arizona shutting down 10 state parks, this is important because the state is losing natural habitat that is becoming rare. In education students are often taught the importance of respecting and cherishing the planet, especially recently due to the popular belief in global climate change. One of the main lesions taught is to keep as much land natural as possible, and state parks can be great way to preserve land and teach people to respect the land. However, the state of Arizona is closing ten sate parks due to budget cuts, this is bogus because if people are teaching this lesson, they need to follow through. This can also relate to the individual that might use the land often for recreation, and it especially relates to the world because if the parks are plowed over then they will never be the same.

“Laptop Falls From Minn. LifeLink Helicopter, Almost Hits Boy,” from emsresponder.com tells of a strange story of a laptop computer that fell from a medical helicopter after it took off, this is important because the incident is being investigated by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the LifeLink Medivac company. The helicopter needed to leave the hospital quickly because another chopper was about to land and they had a patient who needed the hospital’s assistance. The flight paramedic innocently left the laptop on the helicopter’s skid and it fell of when the helicopter made a turn. The boy who was almost hit told his mother who then called the hospital, who sent a security guard and the flight paramedic. The important part of this story is not that a laptop was lost but that, the system works so well that incidents such as this are investigated by the authorities.
This lesson can be taught in education that we need to work towards making systems such as this work. This can also relate to the individual because the individual needs to know that the justice or investigating system can work and needs to maintain. This story and idea relates to the quote saying that “a true patriot receives a parking ticket, and is ecstatic the system works.” The quote means that people need to work towards the system and be proud of what they have, even if it is a parking ticket

“New Hampshire Pursuit Exceeds 100 MPH,” from wmur.com tells of a car chase in New Hampshire where speeds of 100 mph were reached, this is important because car chases are very dangerous and this suspect did not seem to have any reason to run from Law Enforcement. The man who ran had no criminal background, but was driving drunk when two Law Enforcement Officers spotted him and began a pursuit. The officers used spot sticks, wires that are spread out on the road in an attempt to pop the suspect’s tires. The spike strips worked but the suspect continued to flee. Many Sheriff Departments and Police Departments have set requirements for officers to chase suspects, such as the threat level of the criminal or whether or not he is armed. In recent years Law Enforcement Helicopters have become a popular tool for Law Enforcement to use against fleeing suspects because no matter how fast a car is it cannot out run a helicopter. However, helicopters are very expensive and can use tax payers money, that could be put toward education or funding for parks that so many children enjoy. The question is; it worth using money from education or a park to help keep the world safe?

“Eagle Scout Fined $25k for His Mountain Rescue” from backcounty.com tells of an eagle scout who broke his ankle in the mountains, this is important because sometimes victims lost in the mountains will refuse to call for help because they cannot afford the rescue. Under New Hampshire law victims of a mountain rescue are required to pay back the agencies involved in there rescue. Many people refuse to call for help because they know that they will have to pay for their rescue. In Colorado all search and rescue is free, this lets lost hikers much more ready to call for help if they need to. This relates to the world because Colorado can be an example for states like New Hampshire where they charge for rescue.

“Coast Guard medevacs man off tugboat in Southwest Pass,” by Lt. Rebecca Fosha tells of a Coast Guard Rescue Helicopter that hoisted a man off a tugboat because he was having symptoms of a heart attack. This is important because when boats and ships go at sea they can be miles away from help if there is a medical problem with somebody onboard. Luckily, the coast guard is available to come to a citizens need. This relates to education because people need to create systems that are there for other people and be able to work those systems. This relates to the world because America can be a role model in showing other countries how to take care of its citizens.

In English 9 with Mrs. Smith laptop computers are an everyday part of class. Every morning students come in, check out their laptops, and begin their work. Laptops make learning easier than the old fashioned way of pen and paper. Laptops have spell check that teaches students how to spell correctly. Also, the entire internet is at the student’s disposal. Quick, easy searches on the internet can teach a student more than looking through an encyclopedia. Laptops can sometimes be distracting but the benefits outweigh the risks in education.

“Search intensifies for missing Greeley girl” from the Denver Post tells of a 12 year old girl in Greely Colorado who went missing after she didn’t make it to her destination. This is important because it shows how dangerous the world can be. It is often taught to children to stick together and that girls should never go anywhere alone. In this case a partner or chaperone could have prevented this girl from going missing. Howe ever, children sometimes need time on their own and to be self-dependent to grow up naturally. In this case the risks needed to be weighted as well as the benefits.

“Two-Day Struggle for UK Rescuers to Move Morbidly Obese Man,” from EMS responder.com tells of a man who was so fat that it took fire department three days just to get him out of his house and into an ambulance. This is a problem because some much recourse was wasted on one man that if there was a mass casualty incident (MCI0 in the same district lives may have been lost. In Colorado Rural Metro Ambulances has a baritric ambulance that is capable of handling extremely obese patients and the fire department has saws capable of cutting down walls to make the process of extracting patients much faster. “Boy, 2, Shot Twice by Fla. Police Fighting for Life” tells of a 2 year old by who was accidentally shot when Sheriff’s Deputies were shooting at a carjacker, this is important because not only was the suspect shot and killed but an innocent bystander was harmed and is now in life threatening condition. It isn’t often that a law enforcer (Sheriff Deputy, Police officer, federal agent) draws his/her weapon but when they do it is always a serious situation. Law enforcement is taught to be very careful around civilians when they do decide to shoot but it seems that during this incident they were not careful enough. It is a risky situation shooting at people out in the populated world and not on a range so law enforcement officers need to be careful and weigh the risks and benifits

“Worse Than Getting Lost in the Mountains? Getting Found by the Local News?” From backcountry.com tells of a group of backcountry mountaineers who became lost in the mountains and were accidentally located by the local news helicopter. In this article the writing actually makes fun of the mountaineers and states how it is humiliating that it was the news that found them instead of a search and rescue team. Search and Rescue (SAR) did not respond until the news company reported them because they had no report of the overdo mountaineers. This relates to education because students are often taught by their friends and even some teachers that it is bad to be humiliated, but these mountaineers could have been in a life or death situation had they had to stay in the backcountry. In the world people are often looked down upon if they do something embarrassing but if somebody wants to survive they need to be able to take the risk.

“Neb. Paramedics Investigated After Boy Handed Radio,” from EMS responder tells of a paramedic who let a boy talk on the Fire Department radio channel in an attempt to calm the boy down after his grandmother had a life threatening asthma attack. The boy was very worried about his grandmother and was becoming a distraction for the medic who was care-giving so the EMT let the boy use the radio to give a required status update to the command center. The effort did help calm the boy down and even inspired the boy to be a paramedic when he was older. However, fire department and police radios are very secure and a serious place. It is a $1,000 fine just for using a swear word on the radio, and only trained professionals are legally aloud to talk on the radio and emergency channels. This relates to education because sometimes the best way to learn something is to do it personally and it relates to the world because sometimes breaking the rules can be alright and help save lives.
